The Taito Type X King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match Whole Board is the game and motherboard for the 1998 fighting game released by SNK, and is the fifth game in the King of Fighters series.
This edition of the game was dubbed a "special edition", as it featured most of the characters who appeared in the previous games (from KOF '94 to '97), regardless of whether the character was killed in the story.
Like in previous games, players have a choice between two playing styles: Advance and Extra, with a few slight modifications to Advance. This time when one character loses a round, the losing team is given a handicap in its favour, which means that the player's stock capacity for Power Gauges is increased by one. While in Extra mode, the time it takes to charge one's power gauge to maximum level is shortened.

Taito Type X is not a specification for a single set of hardware, but rather a modular gaming platform supporting multiple hardware configurations with different levels of graphical capability. This flexibility allows game developers limited choice in selecting a configuration to fit the game's specific requirements, and allows the platform as a whole to more efficiently support gaming titles with vastly different computing needs.
