ARCANA HEART
The Arcana Heart series is a 2D arcade fighting game series developed by Examu Inc. (formerly Yuki Enterprise), and was first released in late 2006. In all the games, players select from an original all-female cast and then choose an "elemental alignment", or Arcana, which determines the character's special moves.
Arcana Heart 2 is the sequel to Arcana Heart and was the first game in the series to be developed and published by Examu, following the transfer of rights from Yuki Enterprise. It was also the first game for Examu's proprietary eX-BOARD, which was based on Windows XP Embedded, and became the standard platform for Examu arcade games.
The game featured 6 new fighters in the roster, each with their own unique Arcana, and also included new techniques, such as:
- Arcana Blast, which allowed the player to become temporarily invulnerable;
- Arcana Homing, players could simultaneously close the distance between them and the opponent while homing in on them; and
- Critical Heart, a devastating special attack unique to each character.
Suggoi! Arcana Heart 2 (also known as Arcana Heart 2 Super) was a major update to the sequel released in 2008 and updated again in 2009. This version further balanced the game and fixed some technical issues the game was having, as well as some design changes such as new character illustrations and a red redesign for Kaya Hirotaka.
New additions in the update included an additional stage; three new characters including Nazuna Inuwaka, Akane Inuwaka, and Parace L'Sia; their respective Arcana - Kayatsuhime (Flower), Fenex (Sound), Parace L'sia (Life); new colour palettes for each character, available by pressing the Start button on the character select screen; and an additional training mode.
Arcana Heart 3 was released in 2009 and was the third entry in the Arcana Heart series, following the events of Arcana Heart 2. It continues the series' usage of Arcana, or celestial beings based on the characters from the Tarot, and includes an all-female cast of 23 playable characters; plus the 23 Arcana each have their own unique powers, to augment the abilities of the girls. Twenty of the characters are returning from previous games in the series, while there are three new playable characters (and corresponding Arcana): Weiss, Scharlachrot and Eko.
The game also adds a Force Gauge to the fight system that, when completely filled, allows the player to perform an Extend Force, a move similar to the Arcana Burst special attack. It has also added a "Simple Mode" which simplifies the control layout into a single button for each major function: one button for normal attacks, one button for special moves, one button for moves involving Arcana, and one button for the game's Homing Dash ability.
DAEMON BRIDE
Examu released Daemon Bride in 2009 as a 2D fighting arcade game, which tackles the classic battle between good and evil using Arcana Heart’s four-button game technique (weak attack, strong attack, shooting and dashing) and includes the “Simple Mode” present in Arcana Heart 3.
This was the second fighting series from Examu and unlike Arcana Heart, it featured a mixed gender roster of characters.
