Dead or Alive is the first installment in the Dead or Alive series. It is a popular fast-paced 3D fighting game developed by Team Ninja and produced by Tecmo.
The fighting system used in DOA is a circular rock/paper/scissor like relationship between three types of moves: holds, throws, and blows - A blow beats a throw, a throw beats a hold, and a hold beats a blow. The game is powered by the Naomi motherboard with a huge improvement in graphics.
The game has many multi-tiered levels, with players able to knock their opponent off the ledge of some stages. This deals damage to the opponent, with the other player jumping down to the same level but not receiving any damage. There are also a number of stages with walls which will deal damage if you knock your opponent into one, and hazard walls such as electrified fences which will inflict even more damage.
