Columns is a match-three puzzle video game, first created in 1989 by Jay Geertsen, and the Columns Arcade PCB is perfect for customers looking to replace their current board or looking to replace a board in an arcade cabinet.
Columns game play is a simple but elegant formula, that has some similarity to Tetris. The game takes place inside a tall, rectangular playing area where columns of three differently-colored jewels appear at the top of the well and fall to the bottom, landing either on the floor or on top of the pile.
Like Tetris, players can move the column left or right while it's falling and can also cycle the positions of the symbols within it. When the columns lands, if there are three or more of the same symbols connected in a straight line horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, they will disappear and the player will earn points. As the pile falls back into place, it will repeat this process until there are no more matches of three or more jewels. If the well fills beyond the top of the screen, the game ends.
Occasionally, players will get a special column called the Magic Jewel Column, which appears at random during the game. The Magic Jewel flashes with different colors and when it lands, it destroys all the jewels with the same color as the one underneath it.
As is traditional with classic arcade games, the columns will start falling at faster rates as the player progresses through the game, and players must keep playing for as long as possible to earn as a high a score as possible.
